Travis Kelce not worried if Swifties think he dresses 'like a clown'

Travis Kelce is shaking off critics of his outfits saying that he needs “at least three hours” when he’s deciding what to wear on game-day.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end has found himself under a microscope as his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift heats up.

But after Swifties accused him of having “the worst taste in clothes” and likened a pair of pants he was wearing to “mother’s curtains,” the two-time Super Bowl champ insists he’s a fashionista with 300 pairs of shoes and a closet the size of a bedroom.

“It really just goes down to the wire,” Kelce says of his lengthy prep time to choose what he’s going to wear in a new interview with the Wall Street Journal. “I kind of enjoy the creative process of the panic to just throw something together.”

But the eight-time Pro Bowler knows his style isn’t for everyone.

“I’m not going to be offended if somebody says I look like a clown if I got a fun hat on and some wacky jeans,” he says. “It is what it is. I’m gonna have fun with it.”

Kelce’s looks came under fire after he was spotted out with Swift and more fans started paying attention to his looks. One outfit, which he shared to his Instagram with the caption, “keep it chill like Sauvignon Blanc,” drew much laughter from fans.

“What is that… velvet ?!?!” FOX Sports’ Charissa Thompson asked, while another follower wondered, “Why is he wearing mother’s curtains?”

“It’s the Midnights pants for me,” a third wrote, referencing the album artwork for Swift’s most recent studio album.

He was also mocked for a denim outfit he wore after Swift attended a Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium last month.

“He is so ready for 1989 TV,” one critic swiped, while a second joked, “Yeah, my buddy is a painter. He got that same outfit.”

Swift and Kelce have been in the early stages of a romantic relationship the past few weeks, when the NFL All-Pro invited her to a game after he tried — and failed — to meet her during her Eras Tour in July.

“I’ve seen you rock the stage at Arrowhead,” he recalled telling her during a chat last month on The Pat McAfee Show. “You might have to come see me rock the stage at Arrowhead and see which one’s a little more lit. We’ll see what happens in the near future.”

An insider told PEOPLE that after Swift heard about the invite, she quickly accepted.

FOX Sports broadcasters Charissa Thompson and Erin Andrews recounted how they pleaded with Swift to “go on a date with this guy” back in August on their Calm Down podcast, calling Kelce “fantastic.”

“You two are something else!!” Kelce remarked in the comments section of Thompson’s Instagram post afterwards. “I owe you big time!!”

This past weekend the Kelce and Swift made a surprise cameo appearance on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. Afterwards, the couple attended the cast party and stayed out “until after 4 a.m.”

“Taylor and Travis were there all night and they were so smiley, they were so happy,” an insider told PEOPLE. “They were so talkative. They were really fun. They talked to every single person in the room that talked to them.”

One source told Entertainment Tonight that “they kissed throughout the evening,” while another added that later on in the night Kelce became the Anti-Hero star’s personal protector.

“At one point, he actually told her security guard that he could step aside, like he’d take it from here.”

And Kelce’s chivalrous behaviour appears to be winning Swift over.

“Travis is different from anybody Taylor has dated before and she is falling for him more and more as the days go by,” a source tells Us Weekly, adding that he “goes out of his way” to make her feel special.

“Friends close to Taylor and Travis think they make an amazing power couple, and they couldn’t be happier for them,” the insider adds.

With the pop star’s touring schedule revving up again next month when she resumes her Eras Tour, the two will have a busy end to the year, but they’re committed to putting in the work.

“They’ll figure it out,” a source tells PEOPLE. “He’s said it himself, he knows what he signed up for with this attention, but they’ve spent time under the radar too. They’re giving things a real try.”
