Teams combine for 11 first-period goals during OHL barn burner in Windsor

This one was about as wild as they come, which is saying a lot considering the often-unpredictable nature of a junior hockey game.

In an Ontario Hockey League game on Thursday night that won’t exactly go down as being a defensive gem, the Windsor Spitfires and Owen Sound Attack combined for a whopping 15 goals with the Attack winning 12-3.

The craziest part of it all? Eleven of those goals were deposited in the game’s opening 20 minutes.

The OHL record for most goals by both teams in a single game is 22, set when Sault Ste. Marie beat Peterborough 16-6 in January 1977 and when Ottawa pummelled Brantford by the same score in January 1980. But 15 sure is plenty and 11 goals in one period is downright crazy.

Owen Sound scored eight times in the opening frame at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, while the host Spitfires responded with three goals. Windsor swapped goalies twice during the game. Both teams finished with 36 shots on goal.

No word as to whether the goal-light official made it through the contest.

Earlier in the day, Windsor, which sits in the league’s basement, dealt overage winger Alex Christopoulos, who was third in the OHL last season with 49 goals, along with high-scoring defenceman Rodwin Dionicio to the Saginaw Spirit, this year’s Memorial Cup host.
