Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes debut new handshake at Chiefs game

Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes have worked out their very own special celebration to cheer on the Kansas City Chiefs as the team continues its winning streak.

During the second quarter of Sunday’s game, after Brittany’s husband, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Swift’s new boyfriend, Travis Kelce, connected for a touchdown, the new BFFs debuted a new celebratory handshake, which the NFL shared to X.

The two slapped the fronts and backs of their hands several times and then knocked hips together in a clip captioned, “Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes have a BFF handshake.” Later, they tried a jumping chest bump.

Mahomes threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns, while Kelce caught 12 passes for 179 yards and a score. The Chiefs thumped the Los Angeles Chargers 31-17 to seize command of a division they have won for seven straight seasons.

On social media, the cheer drew a mixed reaction. “Please. Stop. Showing. This. Chick. on every break & highlight. I am about to start listening to games on the radio,” one fan wrote, while another called the handshake, “cringe.”

Still, the two had a lot of backers for their unabashed celebration. “Just two ladies having a blast cheering on their team,” one follower said in support.

“I am glad Taylor is happy and having a great time,” a second added. “Stop the hate people”

“I genuinely can’t get enough of them,” a third wrote.

Swift has been spotted hanging out with Brittany after first appearing at a Chiefs game last month following an invitation from Kelce. Sunday’s matchup against the Chargers marked the first time she sat in the Mahomes’ suite.

After Swift attended a Chiefs game in New York, Brittany joined the pop star and her celebrity friends Sophie Turner and Blake Lively for dinner.

“They dined in a private room. Everyone had a blast,” an insider told PEOPLE. “They all got along and were just laughing all night over drinks and delicious food.”

Their friendship comes as Swift is becoming a regular fixture at Chiefs games as her romance with Kelce blossoms.

“Brittany is thrilled to be building a genuine friendship with Taylor,” a source told Us Weekly earlier this month. “They’ve hung out a couple of times and have grown fairly close in a short period of time.”

The insider added that Brittany thinks Swift is “so sweet” and “down to earth.”

“The fact that Patrick and Travis are best friends makes things even better,” the source said.

In addition to the new cheer, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Swift was wearing a subtle tribute to Kelce.

The Cruel Summer singer, 33, was sporting a gold-beaded bracelet that had a heart and the number 87 on it. Kelce’s jersey number is 87.

Friendship bracelets are a big part of her Eras Tour and earlier this summer Kelce said he tried to give Swift a one when she played a concert in Kansas City.

“I wanted to give Taylor Swift (a bracelet) with my number on it,” he told his brother Jason on their New Heights podcast. “I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings so I was a little butt-hurt I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”

Undeterred, he later invited Swift to a game.

“I told her, ‘You know, I’ve seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead (Stadium), you might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one’s a little more lit,’” Kelce said during an appearance on the The Pat McAfee Show.

Kelce’s behaviour on and off the field appears to be winning Swift over. After the game Sunday, the two left the stadium together hand-in-hand.

“Travis is different from anybody Taylor has dated before and she is falling for him more and more as the days go by,” a source tells Us Weekly, adding that he “goes out of his way” to make her feel special.

“Friends close to Taylor and Travis think they make an amazing power couple and they couldn’t be happier for them,” the insider adds.

With the Grammy winner’s touring schedule revving up again next month when she resumes her Eras Tour in South America, the two will have a busy end to the year, but they’re committed to putting in the work.

“They’ll figure it out,” a source tells PEOPLE. “He’s said it himself, he knows what he signed up for with this attention, but they’ve spent time under the radar too. They’re giving things a real try.”
