The Toronto Police Service (TPS) has announced a solemn procession in memory of police dog Bingo, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on July 25.
At approximately 8:40 p.m. on July 25, Sgt. Brandon Smith and his K9 partner, Bingo, of Police Dog Services (PDS), were in the Kipling Avenue and Dixon Road area conducting a search for a reported armed suspect, according to TPS.
During the operation, a critical interaction occurred between the police and the suspect, resulting in a devastating outcome for Bingo. The police dog was shot and killed while bravely serving alongside his human counterpart. In response, the suspect was shot by the police and subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment. Presently, the suspect remains in custody.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. As such, further details regarding the events surrounding Bingo’s tragic death cannot be provided at this time.
Bingo, a two-year-old German Shepherd, joined the Toronto Police Dog Services in July 2022, embarking on an intense training course under the guidance of Sgt. Brandon Smith. After months of rigorous preparation, Bingo successfully graduated from the program in December 2022, ready to serve and protect the community.
In light of this heartbreaking loss, the Toronto Police Service is organizing the procession to honor the memory and service of Bingo. The procession will take place on July 27 beginning at 7:30 a.m. from 920 Yonge St.. It is an opportunity for the public and media to pay their respects and acknowledge the dedication and sacrifice of this brave K9 officer.
The procession will head northbound towards Belmont Street and then continue eastbound on Rosedale Valley Road, making its way towards the Don Valley Parkway.
During the procession, TPS units, including the Police Dog Services, the Emergency Task Force, and the Motor Squad, will come together to honor Bingo’s memory. Chief Myron Demkiw will also be present to express his gratitude and condolences.
